This decision came in response to an emergency request from the Trump administration while litigation continues.
The court’s brief order noted dissent from the three liberal justices.
The ruling represents a significant setback for the seven transgender service members who had filed a lawsuit to challenge the ban, led by Navy Commander Emily Shilling.
The ban, announced in February, is more comprehensive than a previous proposal during Trump’s first term, disqualifying individuals with gender dysphoria or those who have undergone medical interventions related to it.
Challengers of the ban claimed it violates the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which mandates equal application of laws.
Their legal team highlighted that transgender service members have demonstrated they can serve effectively.
A federal judge in Washington state had previously blocked the policy, stating it was not a close question, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals chose not to maintain that ruling, prompting the Trump administration to appeal to the Supreme Court.
