Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter Passes Away

David Souter, the former Supreme Court Justice, passed away at the age of 85 on Thursday at his home in New Hampshire.

Souter, who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush became a solid vote for the liberal wing of the court during his time as a justice.

CNBC Reports:

“Justice David Souter served our Court with great distinction for nearly twenty years. He brought uncommon wisdom and kindness to a lifetime of public service,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement.

“After retiring to his beloved New Hampshire in 2009, he continued to render significant service to our branch by sitting regularly on the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit for more than a decade,” Roberts said. “He will be greatly missed.”

Appointed in 1990 Souter retired in 2009, allowing then-President Barack Obama to appoint current Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor to the bench.

The death of former Justice David Souter was announced by the Supreme Court in a press release included above.
