Representative Jared Golden (D-Maine), who has repeatedly held a Trump-leaning district, announced Wednesday he will not seek reelection, writing that “now is the right time to step away from elected office.”
Golden, who represented Maine’s 2nd District — which former President Donald Trump won by about ten points in 2024 — said in a Bangor Daily News op-ed that while he “never loved politics,” he found “purpose and meaning in service.”
His decision comes as he faced pressure from both a primary challenger on the left and a strong general election opponent, former Republican Governor Paul LePage, leaving Republicans well-positioned to reclaim the key battleground seat.
