A federal judge in Washington, D.C., delivered a striking ruling Thursday, declaring that the Pentagon’s deployment of National Guard troops to the nation’s capital was unlawful. U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb, overseeing the case in the District of Columbia, issued the decision while also staying its effect until December 11 to allow for an appeal.
Since August, more than 2,000 National Guard members have been stationed in Washington, assisting local law enforcement in efforts to curb rising crime. The troops have played a visible role in maintaining public order, particularly during late-night patrols and at high-profile locations.
